Course Information

All courses are individually designed to meet the needs of each student and their personal study goals. Before the course starts
we will identify your learning goals, strengths and weaknesses in English and anything you might like to focus on in particular.
The course will then be developed around your identified language needs.

The length of each course depends on your learning goals -
you can choose between one week (Mon-Fri) or several weeks!
We also offer a long-term study & accommodation option for intensive English development (1-3 months).

Courses are normally one-to-one (1:1) but you can also book a course together with a friend (2:1) if you have a similar level of English and requirements.

Course descriptions

General English course

This course is designed to help students to improve all four skills:  listening, speaking, reading and writing. It also focuses on grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation.  The course is individually designed to meet the needs of each student and their personal study goals. The course will normally follow a course book which matches your language level and context. This will be combined with a variety of other materials such as video and news clips, magazine and newspaper articles as well as input about British culture to make the lessons both varied and interesting!

English Level:  A1 Beginner to C2 Advanced

Suitable for:  Students who would like to learn, refresh or further broaden their English. This course can be taught on its own or be combined with an exam preparation course (IELTS, TOEIC), Business / professional English course, Holiday English course or English Living course.

Business / professional English course

This course focuses on developing all four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) as well as the English you need for your work and professional life (business vocabulary, expressions, phrases, practising small -talk and office language). The course can include:

   Developing students business English for overseas office communication, talking about their role, the company they work for, its products and services.

   Focusing on areas such as English for tourism related industries. For example working for a tour operator, travel agency, tourism marketing organisations and hotels.

   Focusing on areas such as English for education and teaching. For example English refresher courses for English teachers in school or colleges or trainee English teachers.

English Level:  B1 Pre-Intermediate  to C2 Advanced

Suitable for:  This course suits students who have learned English before and have a good understanding of English. This course can also be combined with the general English course and the conversation course to broaden the learning spectrum.

Exam preparation courses: IELTS

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is one of the most recognised international standardised tests of English language proficiency. There are two versions of the test:

   academic (for those  who want to study in an English-speaking country)

   general (for those who want to work, train, study or live in an English-speaking country)

An IELTS preparation course will help you to:

   prepare for the exam and maximise your IELTS exam result

   learn effective exam techniques

   develop your time-management skills for the test

   widen your IELTS exam vocabulary

If you plan your IELTS preparation course a couple of months in advance it’s possible to then take the exam straight  after the course as there is an IELTS testing centre near Worthing.

English Level:  B1 Pre-Intermediate to C2 Advanced

Suitable for:  Students who would like to take the IELTS exam in the next few months. This course can also be combined with the general English course and grammar or conversation course to broaden the learning spectrum.

Exam preparation courses: TOEIC

The Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC) is an internationally widely recognised test designed specifically to measure the everyday English skills of people who are working in an international environment.

There are two different forms of the test:

   Listening & Reading (tests skills for face-to-face communication, meetings, video-conferencing,  telephone conversations, email, reports, newsletters and other forms of business correspondence)

   Speaking & Writing (tests pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, fluency and sentence structure)

A TOEIC preparation course will help you to:

   prepare for the exam and maximise your TOEIC exam result

   learn effective exam techniques

   develop your time-management skills for the test

   widen your TOEIC exam vocabulary

English Level:  B1 Pre-Intermediate to C2 Advanced

Suitable for:  Students who would like to take the TOEIC test in the next few months. This course can also be combined with the general English course and grammar or conversation course to broaden the learning spectrum.

Intensive English conversation

This course is designed to help students build their confidence using English both in every-day as well as using English for their professional purposes. A particular focus of this course is developing fluency, accuracy, improving pronunciation and expanding vocabulary.

This course is usually built around a variety of different materials:

   video and news clips

   newspaper and magazine articles

   language activities

   communication games

Depending on the student’s interest, the course can focus on a variety of topics such as:

   discussing topics of general interest  (current affairs, politics, finance, news)

   exploring and discussing British culture and customs

   talking about the student’s work context (job, company/industry, future developments, career opportunities)

English level:   B1 Pre-Intermediate to C2 Advanced

Suitable for:   Students who would like to focus in particular on their speaking skills. This course can also be combined with various other courses such as the general English course, business / professional English course, the exam preparation courses or with an English Living course (out-of-the classroom activity sessions).

Intensive English grammar

Learning grammar can be fun! This is a specialised and interactive course which focuses on learning, refreshing and practising English grammar. The course builds on the existing grammar knowledge of each student, encourages students to discover grammar rules and uses a variety of activities, language games and exercises to practise grammar structures. The course focuses on the specific language needs of each student and is designed to help each student to become more confident in using English.

English level: A1 Beginner to C2 Advanced

Suitable for:  Students of all levels who have a keen interest in developing their understanding of English grammar. The course can be tailored to suit all language levels - beginner, intermediate or advanced and can be combined with all other courses.

Holiday English

This course is for students who would like to learn / improve their English for travelling abroad. The topics covered in this course depend on the context of the student and can include using English in a variety of situations, for example:

   communicating in a hotel (reception, services, complaints)

   asking and informing about tourist attractions, sightseeing tours and facilities

   going shopping (asking about clothes, prices, availability, colours)

   ordering food / drink in a pub and restaurant, asking about ingredients, paying the bill

   small talk with other tourists / every-day conversations

   asking the way

This is a very interactive course with plenty of opportunities to practise language structures and dialogues for life outside the classroom.

English level:  A1 Beginner to C2 Advanced

Suitable for: Students who would like to learn and improve their English for going abroad on holiday. This course can ideally be combined with the English living course (out-of-the classroom activity lessons), the General English course or the English conversation course.

English Living (out-of-the classroom activity lessons)

These informal out-of-the-classroom activity lessons give the student an opportunity to practise their English in every-day situations outside the classroom to further build their confidence in speaking English. It’s also a fun way of having a study holiday!

Here are some examples of English Living lessons:

   visiting local castles / cathedrals / country gardens / parks

   walking by the local sea / Arun river / in the South Downs National Park

   going for ‘Afternoon tea’, ‘High tea’, ‘English breakfast’ or ‘fish and chips’ in a local pub or cafe

   going to a local English café and practise your English by talking about a topic of your choice

   going to the cinema and discussing the film afterwards in a local pub

   cooking / baking British food

English level:   A1 Beginner to C2 Advanced

Suitable for:   Students who would like to practise their English in everyday-situations outside the classroom and who have a keen interest in British life and culture. This course can be combined with any other course.

Note: The normal hourly rate applies for English Living lessons. Extra costs apply for the student’s own  food, drink and tickets.
